ABSTRACT

Damage to masonry walls due to deterioration of their rubble core can be a major concern and, in the event that consolidation techniques are determined to be necessary, it is important that the selected strategy should consider the need to maintain the existing aesthetic quality of the masonry, as well as its structural integrity – both during and after the grouting operations. In particular, it is generally recognized that a restored structure should be able to adequately accommodate stresses created by differential movement of components during changes in temperature and dynamic loading conditions. The techniques that are available for core consolidation are discussed, together with Canadian case studies which illustrate specific strategies that were designed to arrest deterioration while providing improved durability and adequate movement accommodation. The many factors that were considered during the development of the grouting strategies are evaluated, including minimum intervention, structural stability, investigation methods, desirable properties of grouting materials and the impact of placement techniques. Also reviewed is the use of modern nondestructive methods that were used to evaluate the condition of the hidden core and determine the location of voids. A cement-based cellular foam grout that best matched the criteria of desired properties and performance requirements will also be examined.
