Canadian Masonry Symposiums
Researcher from around the world are hosted within Canada once every 4 years to share and celebrate innovation and development in our understanding of masonry from the past, present, and into the future. We take pride in taking masonry research and making it all available in one place, available to share, for free.
Researchers gather, knowledge is shared
CMDC is proud to facilitate this through our involvement in the Canadian Masonry Symposium
The Canadian Masonry Symposium is the premier national event dedicated to advancing knowledge, research, and best practices in masonry design and construction. Held every four years in a different Canadian city, reflecting the country’s broad academic engagement with masonry design, construction, and performance, the Symposium brings together a diverse community of structural engineers, architects, researchers, industry professionals, students, and masonry contractors to share insights and foster innovation in the field. . Past hosts have included institutions such as Carleton University, the University of British Columbia, McMaster University, and Dalhousie University, among others
Since its inception in 1976 at the University of Calgary, the symposium has grown into a nationally and internationally recognized gathering of academics, engineers, architects, and industry professionals.
the Symposium has served as a vital platform for the exchange of ideas and the dissemination of cutting-edge research on masonry materials, structural behaviour, seismic performance, sustainability, construction techniques, and emerging technologies. It offers a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between academia and industry, ensuring that advancements in research translate into practical improvements on construction sites and in design offices across Canada and beyond.
Attendees benefit from a rich program that includes technical paper presentations, keynote lectures by leading experts, panel discussions, and valuable networking events. The Symposium also recognizes outstanding contributions through awards for the best papers and student research, encouraging the next generation of masonry professionals to push the boundaries of what’s possible with this time-tested and versatile material.
A particularly commendable aspect of the CMS is its commitment to open access. Unlike many academic conferences where proceedings are locked behind paywalls, the CMS ensures that the research presented is freely available to the public. Papers from previous symposia have been digitized and can be accessed through the links below, making this a valuable resource for students, practitioners, and researchers worldwide This open dissemination of knowledge underscores the symposium’s mission to advance the field of masonry through transparency, collaboration, and shared learning.
Whether you are deeply involved in masonry research or looking to expand your understanding of how masonry can contribute to resilient, durable, and beautiful buildings, the Canadian Masonry Symposium is an essential gathering for anyone passionate about the future of masonry construction in Canada.
