Advancing Resilience: The C.T. Grimm Award

The C.T. Grimm Award is presented at the Canadian Masonry Symposium to recognize the best overall paper focused on the building envelope, sustainability, durability, and resilience of masonry materials and structures. At the 15th CMS, 7 papers were nominated, and 5 were selected as finalists, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable and long-lasting masonry solutions in modern construction.

This award is named in honour of Clayford T. Grimm, a leading figure in masonry engineering and education. Known for publishing more engineering literature on masonry than any other American of his time, Mr. Grimm was deeply involved with The Masonry Society (TMS), serving on its Board of Directors and Technical Activities Committee. He was instrumental in developing the TMS website and fostering international collaboration. After 22 years of teaching at the University of Texas at Austin, he continued to contribute to the field as a consultant until his passing in 2003. In recognition of his service, he received the TMS President’s Award in 1995.

The C.T. Grimm Award celebrates research that not only deepens our understanding of masonry performance but also supports the development of more sustainable and resilient built environments.
