ABSTRACT

Existing manuals for the design of geosynthetic- reinforced soil retaining walls with segmental concrete facing are based on the working stress design method. Recently, in Canada the limit states design approach has been introduced in geotechnical engineering. The second and third editions of the Canadian Foundation Engineering Manual include recommendations for the design of foundations and retaining structures using limit states design. In this paper, guidelines are presented for the design of masonry block segmental retaining walls retaining geosynthetic reinforced backfill using the limit states design approach.
